Unit 2 — Becoming Better Readers
Welcome back!
One of the most exciting adventures in Grade 1 is becoming a stronger reader.
Every book you read opens a new door.
Books can teach us about:
- people
- animals
- science
- history
- places
- ideas
- imagination
Every page you read helps your brain grow.
Why We Read
People read for many different reasons.
We read to:
- learn
- solve problems
- have fun
- discover new ideas
- follow directions
- understand the world
Reading is one of the most important lifelong skills.
Good Readers Think
Good readers do more than say the words.
They also think.
While reading, ask yourself:
- What is happening?
- Who are the characters?
- Where does the story take place?
- What might happen next?
- What have I learned?
Thinking while reading helps us understand the story.
Learning New Words
Every book teaches us new words.
When you find a word you do not know:
- read the whole sentence
- look at the pictures
- ask what the word might mean
- ask your teacher, parent, or AI Tutor if you still need help
Every new word becomes another tool for learning.
Reading Smoothly
Strong readers practice reading aloud.
Try to:
- read clearly
- read at a comfortable speed
- pause at periods
- raise your voice for questions
- notice commas and other punctuation
The more you practice, the smoother your reading becomes.
Stories Teach Us
Stories help us learn about:
- courage
- kindness
- friendship
- honesty
- responsibility
- perseverance
Stories also let us imagine places we have never visited.
Reading allows us to travel without leaving home.
Activity
Choose a short story.
After reading it, answer:
Who were the main characters?
Where did the story happen?
What problem did the characters face?
How was the problem solved?
What lesson did you learn?
Draw your favorite part.
Becoming a Daily Reader
Reading every day is one of the best ways to improve.
Even fifteen or twenty minutes each day makes a difference.
