Unit 1 — Becoming an Independent Reader

Welcome to your first Grade 2 lesson!

Last year you learned how to read with growing confidence.

This year you will become an even stronger reader by understanding more of what you read, learning new words, and thinking more deeply about stories and information.

Reading opens the door to every other subject.

The stronger your reading becomes, the easier learning becomes.

Why We Read

People read for many reasons.

We read to:

• learn new ideas
• enjoy stories
• answer questions
• solve problems
• follow directions
• discover how the world works

Every book teaches us something.

Reading Smoothly

Good readers try to read smoothly.

This is called fluency.

Fluent readers:

• recognize many words quickly
• read in complete phrases
• pay attention to punctuation
• make their reading sound natural

Fluency improves with practice.

Understanding What You Read

Reading is more than saying the words.

Good readers ask themselves questions.

For example:

• What happened?
• Who are the main characters?
• Where did the story take place?
• What problem was solved?
• What did I learn?

Thinking while reading helps us understand more.

Learning New Words

Every book introduces new vocabulary.

When you find a word you do not know:

• read the sentence again
• look for clues nearby
• ask someone
• use a dictionary if needed

Every new word makes you a stronger reader.

Fiction and Nonfiction

Books come in many forms.

Fiction tells imagined stories.

Examples include:

• fairy tales
• adventures
• mysteries

Nonfiction teaches about real people, places, animals, science, history, and many other subjects.

Both kinds of books are important.

Activity

Choose a short story or nonfiction article.

After reading it, answer these questions.

• What was the main idea?
• What was your favorite part?
• What new word did you learn?
• What question do you still have?

Discuss your answers with a teacher, family member, or classmate.
