Unit 3 — Writing Clear Paragraphs

Welcome back!

Strong readers often become strong writers.

Writing helps us organize our thoughts, explain our ideas, and share our experiences with others.

This year you will learn to write longer, clearer, and more interesting paragraphs.

What Is a Paragraph?

A paragraph is a group of sentences that all talk about one main idea.

Most paragraphs have:

• a beginning
• a middle
• an ending

Each sentence should help explain the main idea.

Topic Sentences

The first sentence often tells what the paragraph will be about.

This is called the topic sentence.

Example:

"My favorite season is spring."

The rest of the paragraph explains why.

Supporting Sentences

Supporting sentences give details.

For example:

"My favorite season is spring.

The flowers begin to bloom.

The days become warmer.

Birds build nests in the trees.

I enjoy playing outside with my friends."

Each sentence adds another helpful detail.

Closing Sentences

A paragraph often ends with a closing sentence.

The closing sentence reminds the reader of the main idea.

Example:

"Spring is a wonderful time of year."

Now the paragraph feels complete.

Choosing Good Words

Good writers choose words that help readers understand.

Instead of writing:

"The dog was nice."

You might write:

"The friendly dog happily wagged its tail."

Specific words help readers create pictures in their minds.

Checking Your Writing

After finishing your paragraph, read it again.

Ask yourself:

• Does every sentence belong?
• Did I begin with a topic sentence?
• Did I include enough details?
• Does my paragraph have a good ending?
• Did I use capital letters and punctuation correctly?

Good writers improve their work by reviewing it carefully.

Activity

Write a short paragraph about one of these topics:

• My favorite animal
• A fun day with my family
• My favorite place
• A hobby I enjoy

Try to include:

• one topic sentence
• at least three supporting sentences
• one closing sentence

Practice

Complete these topic sentences by writing three supporting details.

"My favorite food is ________."

"My favorite place is ________."

"My best friend is special because ________."

Read your paragraph aloud.

Does it sound clear and complete?

Review
