Unit 15 — History Around Us

Welcome back!

History is the story of people, places, and events from the past.

Everything that happens today becomes part of history tomorrow.

By studying history, we learn how people lived, solved problems, made discoveries, and built the world we know today.

Why We Study History

History helps us:

• understand the past
• explain the present
• prepare for the future
• appreciate the accomplishments of others
• learn from both successes and mistakes

Every generation adds another chapter to the human story.

Sources of History

Historians learn about the past from many kinds of evidence.

They study:

• letters
• diaries
• newspapers

• buildings
• artifacts

Each source helps tell part of the story.

Timelines

A timeline shows events in the order they happened.

For example:

• You were born.
• You learned to walk.
• You started school.
• You completed Grade 1.
• You began Grade 2.

Timelines help us understand the sequence of events.

Important People

Throughout history, many people have improved our world.

Some were:

• inventors

• doctors
• community leaders

Many became successful because they stayed curious, worked hard, and helped others.

Discoveries and Inventions

People have created many inventions that changed daily life.

Examples include:

Activity

Create a simple timeline of your own life.

Include at least five important events.

Then ask a family member about one important event from their childhood.

Add it to a second timeline.

Compare the two timelines.
