Unit 13 — Communities and Government
Welcome back!
People accomplish more when they work together.
Families, neighborhoods, towns, cities, states, and nations are all communities where people cooperate to meet shared needs.
Communities also create governments to make decisions, provide services, and help keep people safe.
Today we will learn how communities and governments work together.
What Is a Community?
A community is a group of people who live, work, or share activities together.
Communities may include:
- neighborhoods
- towns
- cities
- schools
- clubs
- places of worship
Every community depends on people helping one another.
Community Services
Communities provide many services that improve daily life.
Examples include:
- schools
- libraries
- hospitals
- fire departments
- police departments
- parks
- roads
- water systems
These services help communities remain healthy, safe, and productive.
Why Governments Exist
As communities grow, people need organized ways to make decisions.
Governments help by:
- making laws
- protecting rights
- providing public services
- maintaining roads
- supporting education
- protecting public safety
Governments exist to serve the people and promote the common good.
Levels of Government
In the United States there are several levels of government.
These include:
- local government
- state government
- national (federal) government
Each level has different responsibilities.
Working together helps communities function effectively.
Rights and Responsibilities
Citizens enjoy important rights.
Examples include:
- the right to vote (when adults)
- freedom of speech
- freedom of religion
- equal protection under the law
Citizens also have responsibilities.
These include:
- obeying laws
- respecting others
- helping the community
- protecting public property
- being honest and responsible
Rights and responsibilities work together.
Working Together
Communities become stronger when people cooperate.
Examples include:
- volunteering
- helping neighbors
- cleaning parks
- supporting local events
- solving problems peacefully
Every person can make a positive contribution.
Activity
Choose one community service.
Examples:
- library

- park
- hospital
