Grade 4
The Human Knowledge Project
Unit 15 — Engineering and Technology
Welcome back!
People have always looked for better ways to solve problems.
From building bridges to designing computers, engineering and technology help improve the way we live, work, and communicate.
Today you will learn how engineers use science, mathematics, creativity, and teamwork to solve real-world problems.
What Is Engineering?
Engineering is the process of designing, building, testing, and improving solutions to problems.
Engineers work in many fields, including:
- civil engineering
- mechanical engineering
- electrical engineering
- chemical engineering
- aerospace engineering
- biomedical engineering
- environmental engineering
- computer engineering
Every engineering project begins with a problem that needs to be solved.
What Is Technology?
Technology is the practical application of knowledge to make tasks easier or solve problems.
Technology includes:
- simple hand tools
- bicycles
- computers
- medical equipment
- satellites
- robots
- smartphones
Technology continues to change as people discover better ideas.
The Engineering Design Process
Engineers often follow a series of steps.
These include:
- Identify the problem.
- Research possible solutions.
- Imagine different ideas.
- Choose the best solution.
- Build a prototype or model.
- Test the design.
- Improve the design.
- Share the results.
Many successful inventions require several rounds of testing and improvement.
Constraints and Criteria
Engineers must work within limits called constraints.
Examples include:
- cost
- time
- available materials
- safety
- size
- environmental impact
The design must also meet criteria, which are the goals the solution should achieve.
Good engineers balance both constraints and criteria.
Teamwork in Engineering
Large engineering projects are rarely completed by one person.
Engineers often work with:
- scientists
- architects
- technicians
- programmers
- construction workers
- designers
Teamwork and communication are essential for success.
Technology in Everyday Life
Technology helps us every day.
Examples include:
- clean drinking water systems
- transportation
- communication
- farming
- weather forecasting
- medicine
- education
Many technologies continue to improve as new discoveries are made.
Responsible Innovation
New technologies should be developed responsibly.
Before creating something new, engineers often ask:
- Is it safe?
- Will it help people?
- How might it affect the environment?
- Can it be improved?
- Are there unintended consequences?
Responsible innovation helps create a better future.
Activity
Identify one everyday problem.
Examples:
- organizing school supplies
- saving water
- carrying groceries
- reducing waste
Use the engineering design process to create a simple solution.
Draw your design.
Explain:
- the problem
- your solution
- the materials you would use
- how you would test it
- how you might improve it
Practice
Answer these questions.
What is engineering?
How is technology different from engineering?
Name the eight steps of the engineering design process.
What are constraints?
What are criteria?
Why is teamwork important in engineering?
Review
Today you learned:

- technology applies knowledge to practical tasks
- engineering follows an organized design process
- constraints and criteria guide every project
- teamwork strengthens engineering solutions
- responsible innovation considers safety, people, and the environment
Engineering combines creativity, knowledge, and perseverance to improve the world around us.
Looking Ahead
Next we will begin our Grade 4 Social Studies sequence by exploring early American history, including the first peoples of North America, early exploration, and the beginnings of colonial life.
