Week 1 — Welcome to Kindergarten

The first week of Kindergarten is a celebration of learning.

During this week we will learn classroom routines, make new friends, practice listening, ask questions, explore our surroundings, and discover that learning is exciting.

Every day we will build confidence while learning through stories, songs, movement, games, art, conversation, observation, and hands-on activities.

Remember:

There is no race.

There is no perfect student.

Every child learns at a different pace.

Our goal is to enjoy learning and grow a little every day.

Day 1

Looking Carefully

One of the most important learning skills is observation.

Observation means using your senses to notice things around you.

We observe by:

• sometimes tasting (when an adult says it is safe)

The better we observe, the more we discover.

Activity

Look around your room.

Can you find:

• something blue
• something round
• something soft
• something made of wood

Talk about what you found.

Asking Questions

Curious people ask questions.

Questions help us discover new ideas.

Some questions begin with:

• Who?
• What?
• Where?
• When?
• Why?
• How?

There are no silly questions when we are learning.

Every good question helps us understand the world a little better.

Activity

Choose one object nearby.

Ask three questions about it.

Example:

"What color is it?"

"What is it made from?"

"Who uses it?"

Now think of three questions of your own.

Learning From Mistakes

Sometimes we make mistakes.

That is part of learning.

Every person who has ever learned to read, write, ride a bicycle, play music, or solve mathematics problems has made mistakes.

Mistakes help us discover better ways to solve problems.

Instead of saying:

"I can't do it."

Try saying:

"I can't do it yet."

That one small word reminds us that learning takes time.
