Grade 1
The Human Knowledge Project
Unit 10 — Understanding Time
Welcome back!
Time helps us organize our days.
It tells us:
- when to wake up
- when to go to school
- when to eat
- when to play
- when to sleep
Learning about time helps us plan and stay organized.
Parts of a Day
Every day has different parts.
Morning
The Sun rises.
Many people wake up and eat breakfast.
Afternoon
People learn, work, play, and enjoy activities.
Evening
Families often eat dinner together.
Night
The sky becomes dark.
Most people sleep and rest.
Each part of the day has its own activities.
Days of the Week
There are seven days in every week.
They are:
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Saturday
- Sunday
Each week begins again after Sunday.
Months of the Year
There are twelve months in a year.
They are:
- January
- February
- March
- April
- May
- June
- July
- August
- September
- October
- November
- December
Each month brings different weather, holidays, and seasons.
Reading a Clock
Clocks help us know the time.
An analog clock has:
- a short hour hand
- a long minute hand
A digital clock shows numbers.
Both kinds of clocks tell the same time.
Time to the Hour
Let's begin with whole hours.
If the hour hand points to 3 and the minute hand points to 12,
the time is:
3:00
If the hour hand points to 8 and the minute hand points to 12,
the time is:
8:00
We will learn more about minutes later.
Putting Events in Order
Time helps us understand what happens first, next, and last.
Example:
- Wake up.
- Eat breakfast.
- Go to school.
- Come home.
- Eat dinner.
- Go to bed.
Putting events in order helps us tell stories and follow directions.
Activity
Draw a picture of your day.
Label:
- morning
- afternoon
- evening
- night
Now draw one activity that you usually do during each part of the day.
Practice
Answer these questions.
How many days are in one week?
What day comes after Thursday?
What month comes after June?
When do most people eat breakfast?
What do the hands on a clock help us learn?
Review
Today you learned:
- the parts of a day
- the days of the week
- the months of the year
- the purpose of clocks
- how to tell time to the hour
- how to place events in order
Time helps us understand both our daily lives and the world around us.
Looking Ahead
Next we will begin exploring science.
We will discover:
- observing carefully
- asking scientific questions
- making predictions
- recording what we learn
Every scientist begins by paying close attention to the world.
