Unit 11 — Thinking Like a Scientist
Welcome back!
Scientists are curious people.
They enjoy asking questions and discovering how the world works.
The wonderful news is this:
You can be a scientist too.
Every time you carefully observe, ask questions, or test an idea, you are using scientific thinking.
Science Begins with Questions
Many discoveries begin with a simple question.
For example:
- Why do leaves change color?
- Why does it rain?
- Why do shadows move?
- Why do birds build nests?
- Why do some objects float?
Questions help us discover new knowledge.
Careful Observation
Scientists pay close attention.
They use their:
- eyes
- ears
- hands
- noses
Sometimes they use special tools such as:
- magnifying glasses
- rulers
- thermometers
- microscopes
Observing carefully helps us notice important details.
Making Predictions
A prediction is an educated guess.
Suppose you plant a seed.
You might predict:
"I think the seed will grow into a plant."
Predictions help us think before we discover the answer.
Sometimes our predictions are correct.
Sometimes they are not.
Either way, we learn something.
Watching for Changes
Scientists often watch how things change over time.
For example:
A tiny seed becomes a plant.
Ice melts into water.
Clouds move across the sky.
A caterpillar becomes a butterfly.
Recording changes helps us understand nature.
Recording What We Learn
Scientists keep notes.
They draw pictures.
They write observations.
They compare today's observations with yesterday's.
Good records help us remember what we discover.
Activity
Choose one plant, tree, or flower near your home or school.
Observe it once each day for one week.
Draw what you see.
Write one sentence about each day's observations.
At the end of the week, compare your drawings.
